Funding Details

5. Requested amount of the legislatively directed spending item:
$3,000,000.00
6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
The purpose of the SOS Maternity in Michigan initiative is to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths by implementing evidence-based, statewide clinical and community interventions that address the leading causes of maternal mortality, preterm birth, and infant death, which disproportionately affect Black families and rural communities in Michigan. The requested $3 million in legislatively directed funding provides a clear public benefit by supporting a coordinated statewide network that standardizes proven prevention strategies - such as early screening and prevention of preeclampsia and preterm birth - while also removing access barriers through patient navigation, transportation assistance, and support for prenatal care attendance. By expanding this model across Michigan, including maternity care deserts, the investment directly improves health outcomes, reduces costly emergency and neonatal intensive care, and strengthens Michigan's healthcare infrastructure, making it an appropriate, high-value use of taxpayer dollars that saves lives, lowers long-term healthcare costs, and promotes health equity for mothers and babies statewide.
