What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money? The purpose of this legislatively directed spending item is to support wraparound services and support housing development for youth who are currently in foster care or those who are aging out of foster care in Michigan. The project expands a dynamic direct service model known as “The Bridge,” which provides individualized supports focused on housing stability, education, employment readiness, and life skills, and also supports a kinship Connections pilot designed to strengthen family and community-based placements. In addition, the project supports the development of supportive housing units for youth aging out of foster care, addressing a critical gap during the transition to adulthood, and reducing the risk of homelessness and long-term system involvement. This spending item serves a clear public purpose by improving outcomes for a highly vulnerable population, strengthening community stability, and reducing future public costs associated with housing insecurity, emergency services, and institutional care. This project will help kids from all around the state, including the MI 9th district, who are aging out of traditional foster care programs, and provide them with housing and job training, support resources, and hopefully reintegrate them back into their original communities once their situation has stabilized. Note: This funding was cut in the FY 25 work projects
