What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?Michigan’s First Responder Free Mobile CT Scanning Program provides no-cost, early lung cancer screening to firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs, and other frontline personnel statewide. Using a mobile, community-based CT unit, the program delivers fast, clinically validated scans directly to worksites and communities, reducing barriers to access and enabling earlier detection—when treatment is most effective and costs are lowest. Participants also receive care navigation support to ensure timely follow-up, connection to appropriate clinical care when needed, and access to ongoing education focused on cancer risk, prevention, and long-term health. Continuation funding in FY 2027 will sustain statewide deployment, expand reach to underserved regions, and protect the health of Michigan’s first responders through a comprehensive screening, navigation, and education model.
