5. Requested amount of the legislatively directed spending item:
$1,500,000.00
6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
On Detroit’s Eastside, families raising children on the autism spectrum face an overwhelming lack of resources. Access to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is limited, and specialized dental care is virtually nonexistent. Families are often forced to travel long distances, navigating multiple systems to obtain the most basic care for their children. This adds significant stress to parents who are already carrying a heavy burden. We intend to change that by creating a one-stop shop at our Child and Adolescent Center. Our vision includes: - Establishing a sedation dental clinic, the first of its kind in the area, designed specifically for children with developmental and behavioral challenges. - Expanding ABA therapy services, addressing the severe shortage that Eastside families face. - Wrapping children and families in comprehensive, coordinated services so that they no longer need to navigate fragmented systems alone. This combination of services would be truly unique—there is currently no similarly situated dental clinic or integrated hub for children on the spectrum anywhere in the area. By building this out, we will ease the burden on families, increase access to vital care, and create a model of support that can be replicated in other communities.
