What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?Once completed, the St. Mark Community Center will offer vital resources to the public. It will provide a safe, welcoming place for people to warm up in the winter and cool down in the summer. This project will expand access to food through free meals, including the center’s existing Saturday breakfasts for individuals experiencing homelessness and free lunches for local college students. The planned medical clinic, in partnership with Michigan State University, will offer essential health support, reducing overall healthcare costs for those experiencing homelessness. The expanded space will allow for a Café, increased meal production, and a secure environment for all who walk through its doors. Completing the center will also make it possible to install an elevator, ensuring full ADA accessibility so every member of the community can benefit from its services. Renewed funding will transform this building into a fully functioning hub of care, connection, and support for the entire community.
