What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?Residents in Action is building infrastructure in the City of Jackson to better support vulnerable populations, in particular unhoused people, seniors, disconnected youth, and people living in poverty. As part of this work, they are working to open a shelter and community center at the former TA Wilson school in Jackson. By providing a safe place for people seeking shelter to go, they are helping people get back on their feet and breaking a cycle of homelessness and poverty. The impact to the taxpayer is significantly less for a shelter than for emergency room visits or other city-led interventions. The community center will increase well-being in the community. Because of its holistic community focused approach, Residents in Action is particularly well positioned to do this work.
