6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
The Westland Fire Department is an all hazards fire department providing advanced life support, transporting emergency medical services. We operate out of 4 fire stations to over 16,500 calls for service annually. Our Station #4 built in 1972, is currently our oldest fire station and after 54 years of service needs to be replaced. We have outgrown the current station and in addition, with the rebuild of Fire Station #1 in a location a mile north of its past location requires the strategic move of Fire Station 4 a mile north as well to provide for the best response times to the highest number of residence. While we have received some grant funding for this project, increases in build costs leaves us approximately $500,000 short of full funding. Current build costs are approximately 600 sq/ft up from just last year when we built Fire Station #2. To build for the future of our residents, this station should be built to house 3 apparatus and 7 personnel.
