6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
The City of Westland Police Department is requesting State funding to renovate and modernize its Firearms Training Range and Training Facility, originally constructed in 1975. The facility no longer meets modern safety, environmental, or operational standards and presents significant health and safety risks to officers and partner agencies. This project will create a safe, code-compliant, and fully functional regional law enforcement training facility that protects officer health, improves training effectiveness, and strengthens inter-agency partnerships as the Westland range serves multiple agencies including, Wayne Police Department, Canton Police Department, Garden City Police Department, Fire Department Arson Investigators, and 18th District Court Officers. The breakdown of this project is as follows: Target Equipment & Installation (HVAC, filtration, backstop, sound systems):$775,000 Architects – Scoping Study: $30,000 Construction & Management: $795,000
