• What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
  This funding will be used to replace Fire Department Engine 57 (E57), a 1998 Pierce Quantum fire pumper that no longer meets current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for fire apparatus. The expected service life for a fire pumper is approximately 10 years in frontline service followed by 10 years as a reserve unit. Engine 57 has exceeded both thresholds, having served approximately 24 years in frontline service alone. Because E57 does not meet current NFPA requirements, the vehicle presents increased operational risk, reduced reliability, and heightened safety concerns for firefighters and the public. In addition, the age of the apparatus has resulted in escalating maintenance costs, corrosion, and difficulty sourcing replacement parts, with over $17,000 spent on repairs in the past two years. Replacing Engine 57 with a modern rescue pumper that complies with current NFPA standards will significantly improve firefighter safety, emergency response capability, and fire suppression reliability. A new apparatus will reduce long-term maintenance costs, improve operational efficiency, and ensure compliance with modern safety, environmental, and operational requirements. This investment represents a prudent and responsible use of taxpayer funds by protecting life, property, and critical municipal infrastructure while avoiding substantially higher replacement costs in future years driven by inflation, regulatory changes, and long manufacturer lead times.
