  • What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
The purpose of this project is to construct a new Parks Maintenance Building to replace the existing facility, which must be vacated due to the sale of the current parcels. The new building would provide a permanent location for parks maintenance operations, including staff workspace and secure storage for equipment, vehicles, and materials needed to maintain City parks and recreational facilities. This project provides public benefit by ensuring the City can continue to maintain its parks, trails, and public spaces in a safe, efficient, and reliable manner. A dedicated maintenance facility allows staff to respond more quickly to maintenance and safety issues, protects publicly owned equipment, and supports the ongoing care of park assets that serve residents and visitors year-round. This is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it supports an essential public service, protects existing park infrastructure through maintenance, and helps sustain tourism as well as local recreation. A permanent facility protects equipment, makes staff more efficient, and avoids the extra costs and hassle of temporary or improvised set-ups. This way the community and visitors keep getting well-maintained parks year- round.
