What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money? The purpose of this project is to build a combined Police and Fire Department facility to replace the current spaces, which no longer meet the needs of either department. The Police Department currently leases a building that is undersized, showing its age, and nearing the end of its lease, limiting its ability to support the department’s growth. The Fire Department’s garage spaces are too small for current vehicles and lack proper separation between sleeping quarters and office spaces, which creates operational challenges. Both departments are also planning to expand staff in the coming years, increasing the need for a modern, flexible facility. The new facility would provide appropriately sized spaces for each department, a shared common area, and a centrally located site near the Airport on Meridian, improving accessibility and emergency response times. Combining the departments in one purpose-built facility will enhance coordination, allow for more efficient use of resources, and ensure both departments can operate safely and effectively while serving the community and visitors. This project provides a clear public benefit by supporting essential public safety services that protect residents and visitors. A modern facility ensures proper storage and maintenance of equipment, faster emergency response, and safer, more efficient working conditions for personnel. It also reflects the pride of Sault Ste. Marie in maintaining high-quality, reliable public services that residents and visitors can count on. From a fiscal perspective, this investment is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it addresses critical operational deficiencies, accommodates planned staff growth, and reduces reliance on temporary or inefficient spaces. The project is designed to meet current and future needs, providing a durable, efficient, and cost- effective solution that ensures the City’s public safety infrastructure continues to serve the community well for years to come.
