6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?

Funds will be used to replace the outdated existing non-NFPA compliant fire station. Station will be moved to an area that is on the Main Road. A new station that is NFPA compliant will have safety features that will make it cleaner and safer for fire fighters and the community to have gatherings. New station will also include proper training areas to support continuing education efforts. The new space would allow collaboration with other area departments in the mutual aid area, working jointly on MMF and fire related protocol. New location will lead to improved response time to city amenities and parks and increase the ISO rating of area homes. A new well-designed station reduces the need for continuing repairs on an obsolete building, decreasing the continuing need to invest in updates and repairs. This investment would also help improve recruitment and retention for firefighters. Overall, this will contribute to better public safety and financial efficiency for the community and Mid-Michigan.
