- The City of Bronson is requesting funding to complete critical upgrades to its wastewater treatment plant, including replacement of its mechanical bar screen and rehabilitation of influent pumps and valves. These components are the first stage of the wastewater treatment process and are essential to protecting facility equipment, maintaining reliability, and ensuring effective wastewater treatment. The City’s existing influent pumps and valves are aging and increasingly unreliable, creating a heightened risk of failure and reduced operational control. Additionally, the facility’s mechanical bar screen, an automated component that removes inorganic solids, such as rags, plastics, and debris, is not operational and has been taken offline, leaving the facility without adequate screening at the site of wastewater intake. Without this key component, the likelihood of debris entering the treatment process, damaging equipment, disrupting operations, is increased. This project provides a clear public benefit by protecting water quality, supporting regulatory compliance, and ensuring uninterrupted wastewater service for approximately 2,300 residents, as well as local businesses and institutions. Reliable wastewater infrastructure is fundamental to community health, environmental protection, and economic stability. Investment of taxpayer funding in this project is appropriate because it addresses a critical failure in essential public infrastructure, reduces the risk of untreated or inadequately treated wastewater reaching the environment, and prevents more costly emergency repairs or system failures in the future. By proactively restoring full headworks functionality, the City is taking a cost-effective and responsible approach to safeguarding public health and environmental resources.
