What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?: This money would be used to help construct a public safety facility that would include a new jail, sheriff's office and emergency management office for Barry County. County officials describe the existing facilities, which are more than 50 years old, as in poor shape and not suitable for a modern corrections and public safety environment. This is an appropriate use of taxpayer money because public safety is an essential public need and a core government function. This would help make Barry County a stronger and safer community. Barry County is contributing locally with $5.4 million in reserves for this project, but far more resources are needed to undertake the project.
