What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?Funds would support the Autism Navigator Program, a highly specialized, free, statewide service uniquely designed for Michigan families affected by autism, as well as other intellectual and developmental disabilities. Established in 2014, the program was created to guide families through the significant challenges that so many experience living with autism. Individuals with ASD and their families connect to a professional, at no cost, which provides them with a single point of access for information, coordination, and compassionate support. It remains Michigan’s first and only centralized autism resource staffed by professionals specializing in clinical treatment, education, insurance, and adult services. The program has served over 20,000 families, connecting thousands to social service programs, psychiatric or behavioral health services. The program has also helped connect hundreds of Michiganders with employment. Thousands of children have been connected to early diagnosis and intervention, reducing long-term costs for schools and state systems.
