Eva McCall Hamilton (1871-1948)
State Senator 1921-1922. Republican from Grand Rapids, Michigan; she was Michigan's first woman legislator to be elected as a State Senator. She was a teacher. Governor Chase Osborn commended her in a letter on 3/30/1912 for her efforts in the "woman's suffrage cause", when he wrote, "I think no one has done better work for the cause than you." She was elected in 1920 in the first election in which women were allowed to vote.
She was defeated in the primary in the next election, but won the respect of her colleagues. She took pride in being able to gain passage of new laws dealing with women and children. During her life, she remained involved with public issues and continued to serve on various committees, even at the national level. Interment: location unknown.
Artist: Larry J. Blovits (1937-). This artist is from the same city as Eva Hamilton; Grand Rapids. He has a studio and art gallery in the Grand Rapids area. He holds a bachelors and masters degree in find arts from Wayne State University. He has advanced course work in portraiture in Connecticut, New York, and Georgia. He is a former art professor at Aquinas College and has contributed to various art publications.
