  • Senate Business Office - Administrative Assistant
    Under the direction of the Director of the Senate Business Office and supervised by the Business Operations & Communications Manager, the Administrative Assistant performs a variety of administrative functions, including greeting and assisting walk-in visitors and callers; drafting and proofreading communications, guides, forms, and other documents; providing high-level administrative support and assistance to the SBO Director and Deputy Director and departmental directors; and contributing to various projects and initiatives undertaken by the SBO.
  • Senate Business Office - Assistant Sergeant At Arms - Public Safety
    Under the direction of the Director of the Senate Business Office and supervised by the Sergeant at Arms/Chief of Police and the Assistant Sergeant at Arms/Lieutenant of Public Safety, the Assistant Sergeant at Arms/Police Officer - Public Safety is an MCOLES certified Police Officer for the Michigan Senate Police Department (MSPD). The Assistant Sergeant at Arms/Police Officer - Public Safety provides safety and security for Senators, staff, and visitors of the Senate in and around the Michigan State Capitol building and all other Senate office buildings; attends sessions of the Senate, committee meetings, and other Senate events providing security and related services as needed or assigned. The Assistant Sergeant at Arms/Police Officer - Public Safety primary focus is on public relations, Senate Committee room coverage, routine patrol of Senate buildings and providing emergency response as needed. The Assistant Sergeant at Arms/Police Officer - Public Safety will cross-train and job-rotate with the Assistant Sergeant at Arms/Police Officer Operations team to assure complete coverage of each post and assignment.
  • Senate Business Office - Network Administrator
    Under the direction of the Director of the Senate Business Office, SIS Director, and supervised by the IT Services Manager, the Network Administrator provides network infrastructure support, and performs all aspects of the configuration and maintenance of the Senate network and infrastructure systems. The Network Administrator coordinates work activities within the technical support group, and schedules upgrades and maintenance activities with Senate offices.
  • Senator Camilleri - Scheduler & Constituent Services Aide
    Under the direction of the Senate Member and the Chief of Staff, the Scheduler & Constituent Services Aide coordinates the Senate Member’s schedule as well as the schedules of the Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff, engages in some constituent services, and attends some in-district events. This includes answering incoming phone calls and assisting with the scheduling and coordination of meetings and other events. The Scheduler & Constituent Services Aide also drafts correspondence and assists with constituent casework and special projects, as necessary.
  • Senator Polehanki - Chief of Staff
    Under the direction of the Senate Member, the Chief of Staff directs, coordinates, and supervises all operations of the Senate Member’s office, including oversight of staff and budgets, legislative initiatives, constituent casework, scheduling, and daily activities. The Chief of Staff reports directly to the Senate Member and serves as the Senate Member’s chief administrative officer and advisor for all legislative matters. The Chief of Staff is the primary point of contact for the Senate Member’s office.
  • Senator Runestad - Constituent Relations Aide
    Under the direction of the Senate Member and Chief of Staff, the Constituent Relations Aide manages constituent casework for the Senate Member’s office, often serving as a liaison between constituents and state departments to resolve various issues for constituents. As necessary, the Constituent Relations Aide drafts newsletters and other correspondence; provides research; attends meetings; and answers incoming phone calls from constituents.
  • Senator Shink - Administrative Assistant/Scheduler
    Under the direction of the Senate Member and Chief of Staff, the Administrative Assistant greets visitors, answers incoming phone calls, distributes mail, maintains office supplies, and assists with the scheduling and coordination of meetings and other events. The Administrative Assistant also drafts correspondence and assists with constituent casework and special projects, as necessary.
  • Senator Shink - Constituent Services Director
    Under the direction of the Member and Chief of Staff, the Constituent Relations Director manages constituent casework for the Member’s office, often serving as a liaison between constituents and state departments to resolve various issues for constituents. As necessary, the Constituent Relations Director drafts newsletters and other correspondence; holds office hours in the Member’s district; attends meetings; and answers incoming phone calls from constituents.

Part-Time Positions

  • General Services - Courier - Morning Shift
    Under the direction of the Director of the Senate Business Office, and supervised by the General Services Manager, the Courier provides a wide range of services including delivering and receiving documents, supplies and equipment, and assisting with general office duties.
  • Senate Majority Staff - Caucus Services Intern (Paid)
    Under the direction of the Senate Majority Caucus Services Director and supervised by the Caucus Services Specialist, the Caucus Services Intern serves as an assistant with Majority members and member offices as it relates to in district constituent contact.
  • Senator McMorrow - Digital Communications Lead
    Under the direction of the Senate Member and the Chief of Staff, the Digital Communications Lead maintains the office’s reputation for professional, informative, and respectful relationship-building with our constituents. The Digital Communication Lead attends events and meetings with the Senate Member to capture, produce, and publish digital content such as social media videos, photos, or posts, as directed by the Chief of Staff. The Digital Communications Lead also runs the Senate Member’s Facebook page, including a bi-weekly livestream, produces content that the Senate Member can post on their social media channels, and works laterally with the Constituent Services and District Director on e-newsletters and mailers.
  • Senator Santana - Scheduler
    Under the direction of Senator Santana and the Chief of Staff, the Scheduler oversees the Senator’s schedule and coordinates office attendance at District Events. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, answering incoming phone calls and addressing questions from constituents; assists with the scheduling and coordination of meetings and other events; assisting with the drafting of legislation and amendments; tracking a variety of bills throughout the legislative process; maintains office supplies; representing the Senator at district events; attending meetings on behalf of the Senator; and speaking publicly on legislative matters.
  • Senator Shink - Intern (Paid)
    The individual will provide assistance to the Constituent Services and Scheduling Manager ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, and general office management. Some responsibilities will include preparing written correspondence, constituent casework, and administrative duties.

Michigan Senate Internship Program

  • The State of Michigan’s Fiscal Year 2024 budget includes funds to be used for the purpose of cultivating a legislative intern workforce that mirrors the diverse array of individuals that the Senate works with and serves. The Senate Business Office has established a program modeled after successful initiatives within other state and national agencies, aimed at fostering diversity and equity within our intern community and the Senate as a whole.     The individual will provide assistance to the Senate Member ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, and general office management. Some responsibilities will include: legislative research and preparing and producing written and visual documents.
  • Senator Damoose - Intern
    The individual will provide assistance to the Senator and staff ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, and general office management.
  • Senator Hauck - Intern
    The individual will provide assistance to the Senator and staff ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, and general office management.
  • Senator Hertel - Intern
    The individual will provide assistance to the Senator and staff ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, and general office management. Some responsibilities will include: legislative research, attending committee hearings, assisting with correspondence, and directing phone calls.
  • Senator Hoitenga - Intern
    The individual will provide assistance to the Senator and staff ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, and general office management.
  • Senator Huizenga - Intern
    The individual will provide assistance to the Senator and staff ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, and general office management. Some responsibilities will include: monitoring legislation, preparing written correspondence, and conducting legislative research.
  • Senator Nesbitt - Intern
    The individual will provide assistance to the Senator and staff ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, and general office management. Some responsibilities will include: monitoring legislation, preparing written correspondence, and conducting legislative research.
