Legislation to Provide for Income Tax Check-Off Option for United Way Donations

Bipartisan bills would make it easier for people to donate to the United Way

LANSING- State Senators Michael Switalski (D-Roseville) and Jud Gilbert (R-Algonac) introduced bipartisan legislation this week that would provide taxpayers the option to directly donate a portion of their income tax returns to the United Way, a nonprofit organization that provides services and referrals to Michigan residents in need of assistance.

“During this time of economic duress, nonprofit organizations such as the United Way are vital in helping to provide essential needs for Michigan’s residents,” said Switalski. “This legislation would make it more convenient for citizens to donate to the United Way and to help maintain our social safety net for residents that are having difficulty making ends meet.”

Senate Bills 1287 and 1314 would create a check-off box on the Michigan income tax form where taxpayers can voluntarily donate a portion of their return to the United Way.

“Michiganders are generous individuals who rally during tough economic times,” said Gilbert. “Working together, in a bipartisan fashion, we can provide citizens with an easier and direct way to help their fellow citizens and community.”

The Michigan Association of United Ways is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency founded in 1947 by a group of community and labor leaders to help simplify the gathering and distribution of funds that are received through charitable donations. They also run 2-1-1, a toll-free telephone number where citizens can call and immediately be provided with referrals to services that can assist them in their community.

Senate Bills 1287 and 1314 are currently in the Senate Finance Committee.
