PROGRESS MICHIGAN LENDS SUPPORT FOR FORECLOSURE MORATORIUM

Progress Michigan has recently come forward to support the Senate Democrat’s efforts to end Michigan’s foreclosure crisis by taking action to step in and stand up for those who are losing their homes. To help prevent foreclosures, I’ve supported my colleague’s legislation to create a foreclosure moratorium to give homeowners an opportunity to get back on their feet and make regular payments, ultimately helping them keep their homes. For a more in-depth discussion of this legislation, please read this press release.

Nearly everyone in the state is being affected by this epidemic whether it is our families, neighbors or ourselves. By freezing foreclosures, we can focus our efforts more on transforming the state’s economy.

AUTISM BILLS HEAD TO THE SENATE FLOOR

Earlier this week, I presented testimony to the Senate Finance Committee regarding Senate Bill 957, a bill I sponsored which will establish a fund in the Department of Community Health to provide grants to hospitals or universities for research, diagnosis, and treatment of autism. Money for the fund would come from the income tax check-off for an autism research fund proposed by Senate Bill 958.

With our country’s startling autism rate of roughly one in every 150 children born, this is an epidemic that we simply cannot ignore. Providing grants for research related to autism will help raise awareness of the disease as well as help provide information on the early development of autism and possible ways to assess young children. Considering how many families are affected by autism, we need to take immediate action in fighting this condition.

GOVERNOR SIGNS ECONOMIC GROWTH BILLS TO KEEP JOBS IN MICHIGAN

This past week I joined my colleagues Senator Mark Schauer and Senator Hansen Clarke to attend the signing of Senate Bills 1187-90, a bipartisan package of legislation I supported to allow companies to apply for and receive Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) tax credits.

These tax credits are offered based on a company’s number of retained jobs, which will help attract businesses to Michigan and generate new jobs. These measures will also prevent nearby states from luring jobs away from Michigan. I’m confident this investment in our workforce will help strengthen our economy and get the state’s men and women back to work.
