Tupac A. Hunter was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2002. As a State Representative, he served as the ranking Democrat on both the Banking and Financial Services Committee and the Insurance Committee, as well as Chief Whip on the Democratic leadership team. In 2006, he was given the high honor of receiving the Michigan Credit Union League’s Legislators of the Year Award. Hunter has been a strong leader in the effort to increase youth literacy. He has donated thousands of books to children across the metro area through his “Leaders Are Readers” program.

In November 2006, Hunter was overwhelmingly elected to serve the Michigan Senate to represent the citizens of the 5th District, which comprises northwest Detroit, Dearborn Heights, and Inkster. As a freshman Senator, he has been bestowed the honor of being appointed Assistant Democratic Leader. He is the ranking Democrat on both the Banking and Financial Institutions Committee and the Homeland Security and Emerging Technologies Committee. He also serves as a member of both the Commerce and Tourism Committee and the Economic Development and Regulatory Reform Committee.

Senator Hunter has been selected to participate in the 2007 inaugural class of the Democratic Leadership Council Fellows Program. The Democratic Leadership Council is committed to finding new ways to advance Democratic values that result in successful policy proposals that will prove to be effective for the 21st century.

Senator Hunter earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Urban Studies and Public Policy from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Public Administration at Oakland University.

A native of northwest Detroit, Hunter is married and is the proud father of one son.
