Richardville welcomes Young Marines to Capitol

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville (R-Monroe) today was joined by members and staff of the Monroe County Young Marines on the floor of the Michigan Senate in recognition of Young Marines Day.

Richardville sponsored Senate Resolution 87 to recognize October 17, 2011 as Young Marines Day in Michigan.  “It is my distinct privilege to honor the young men and women and the staff of the Young Marines program.  I am proud to have members of my community involved in such a positive organization that does so much to help our young people build confidence and learn leadership skills,” said Richardville.

Richardville was joined by 17 members and 10 staff from the Monroe County Young Marines.  Executive Officer Don Cannon and Adjutant Shari Litten were also present for the special presentation.

The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school.  Eastern Michigan Young Marines and their Commanding Officer Michael T. Havermale, Grand Rapid’s Young Marines and their Training Officer James Gray, and the Tri-County Young Marines from the Lansing Area were also present at senate session.

The Young Marines is the focal point for the U.S. Marine Corps' Youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts. The group emboldens the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building and leadership.  Its three guiding principles are Leadership, Teamwork, and Discipline.

The mission of the Young Marines is to positively impact America's future by providing quality youth development programs that nurture and develop its members into responsible citizens who not only live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle, but promote it as well.

The Young Marines was formed in 1958, with one unit and a handful of members, and has grown to over 300 units with 10,000 youth and 3,000 adult volunteers in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and Germany, Japan, and affiliates in a number of other countries.
