Senate approves Cassis resolution recognizing National Window Covering Safety Month

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

LANSING - State Sen. Nancy Cassis' resolution to recognize October 2009 as National Window Covering Safety Month was approved today by the Michigan Senate.

"My resolution is an effort to raise awareness of the hidden danger of window blind cords," said Cassis, R-Novi.  "Sadly, it is estimated that strangulation by corded window treatments kills one child every two weeks.  Window blinds are also the third-leading cause of death in children daycare settings.  That is why it is important to educate parents and childcare workers of the hazards associated with window blind cords."

Senate Resolution 92 states that "since 1990, more than 200 infants and young children have died from accidental strangling in window cords in the United States."

"This resolution is in memory of Isabela Grace Nagara, who was unfortunately and so sadly strangled by a window blind cord in June 2009 while she was taking a nap," said Cassis.  "She had just turned two years old.  With great sympathy we share her family's grief.  While remembering Isabela, we are bringing attention to this overlooked source of harm to help protect Michigan children from suffering a similar tragedy."

Isabela's parents, Wes and Beth Nagara of Commerce Township, and her uncle, Ron Nagara, were in the Senate gallery when SR 92 was approved and received a copy of the resolution.
