Birkholz applauds measure to create 800 jobs in Lansing area

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Sen. Patty Birkholz today announced that Auto-Owners Insurance Company in Delta Charter Township will receive nearly $29 million for a business expansion project.

Approved by the Michigan Economic Growth Authority Board, the company was awarded a Standard Employment Tax Credit valued at $23.1 million over 10 years and a Brownfield Redevelopment MBT Credit valued at up to $5.8 million.

“This is tremendous news for the Lansing area,” said Birkholz, R-Saugatuck Township.  “The state needs businesses like Auto-Owners Insurance that are willing and able to invest in their operations, especially now during these difficult times because it can help spur local economic growth.”

The Auto-Owners Insurance Company, which provides life, home, car and business insurance, plans to invest $105 million to expand its operation in the township.  The company will enlarge its corporate complex by redeveloping an existing facility on land that is near the main headquarters.

Currently, the company has 1,880 employees in Michigan.  The new project is expected to create 800 positions.

Auto-Owners Insurance was formed in Michigan in 1916 and has been headquartered in Lansing since 1917.
