Bishop forms law enforcement task force to examine potential reforms
Friday, October 23, 2009
Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, today announced the formation of the Senate Law Enforcement Task Force, to examine the relationship between state and local police agencies and identify opportunities for increased integration, cooperation and efficiency. Launch of the task force is in conjunction with Senate Republicans' continuous efforts to reform state government.
Sen. Alan Cropsey, R-Dewitt, will head up the group, accompanied by Sens. John Pappageorge, R-Troy; Alan Sanborn, R-Armada; Jim Barcia, D-Bay City; and Michael Switalski, D-Roseville.
"The government's most important duty, first and foremost, is to provide effective public safety, and Senate Republicans have always made this a top priority," said Bishop. "The Senate Law Enforcement Task Force reinforces our commitment to keeping our communities and families safe, while examining potential areas to increase efficiency and coordination between state and local departments in these hard economic times. We recognize that a cuts-only approach is not enough to solve our budget problems -- we must also implement substantial reforms. This task force is a next step in that effort. Above all, it is crucial that we ease the burden on our hard working law enforcement officers and find ways for them to maintain the highest levels of service to the public."
