Kuipers presents students with special tribute honoring Hispanic Heritage Month

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

State Sen. Wayne Kuipers, R-Holland, today presented a special tribute honoring Hispanic Heritage Month to students in the Adelante! America program of Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).

It was a privilege to meet with and present this fine group of Holland-area students with a special tribute honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, said Kuipers, who chairs the Senate Education Committee. The Latin Americans United for Progress program is an excellent service that helps prepare todays youngsters to be tomorrows leaders.

In addition to the special tribute presentation, the group also observed Senate session from the chamber gallery and later met with Kuipers for a discussion on civics and his legislative duties.

The Hispanic youth leadership program caters to students in grades eight through ten. Participants meet weekly with Hispanic leaders and others from the community who help them develop leadership skills and inform them about different careers. The students also organize and conduct a service project within their community.

Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated annually from

September 15 through October 15, was enacted by former President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
