Richardville supports K-12 budget and votes to enact MBT surcharge relief

LANSING – Sen. Randy Richardville, R-Monroe, issued the following statement regarding the agreement reached Thursday on a 2010 School Aid budget as well as reforms the Senate passed to help phase-out the Michigan Business Tax surcharge:

“The Senate has approved a budget for Michigan schools that reduces the per pupil cut to approximately $165.  Michigan is experiencing tremendous economic challenges, so we had to face the reality that cuts had to be made.  The positive news is that the cut is less than previously proposed.

“We also approved legislation to phase-out the Michigan Business Tax surcharge.  This will provide relief to job providers across the state as they have been hit with a heavy tax burden because of the surcharge.  I sponsored an amendment to this legislation to reinstate credits for business investments, research and development and personal property taxes.  The incentives are important for helping the auto industry and other businesses that are hurting right now.

“The Senate remains committed to keeping education a top priority for students and maintaining a business environment that encourages companies to stay in Michigan.”
