LANSING — Sen. Bill Hardiman was recently recognized by veterans in Michigan for his work on behalf of those who have fought to protect our nation.

Hardiman received the AMVETS Department of Michigan Wolverine Award, and as the recipient, was named the “Citizen of the Year” for 2009.

“As a Vietnam veteran, this award means a great deal because it is coming from other veterans,” said Hardiman, R-Kentwood.  “I appreciate what men and women in the service have done and the sacrifices they have made for our country.”

The Honors and Awards Committee, made up of former department commanders, selected Hardiman for the award because of his unwavering dedication and advocacy for veterans in Michigan.

Hardiman has sponsored legislation to protect war memorials from destruction and to make  programs more readily available for mental health support, financial and economic incentives, and educational opportunities.
