Sen. Jansen comments on continuation budget

LANSING — After a continuation budget to keep the state running past the Oct. 1 deadline was approved Friday in the Michigan Senate, Sen. Mark C. Jansen, R-Gaines Township, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, offered the following statement:
“I won’t risk another state government shutdown. Senate Republicans have approved four individual state department budgets agreed upon with the House. Some budget negotiations are at an impasse on a few items and letting the entire government shut down should not be an option. We need to operate with a plan.
“Letting state government close its doors for the second time in three years would be irresponsible. The one-month, continuation budget put forth by Senate Republicans will give the House leaders and the governor more time to agree on a balanced budget.
“These reductions are very difficult – extremely difficult. It is our constitutional obligation, however, to have a balanced state budget. If we don’t reduce spending this year, next year will be even more devastating. The money just isn’t there. Cuts are inevitable. We have to work together and find solutions together to move forward.”
Jansen is chair of the Senate subcommittee that handles the Department of Labor and Economic Growth budget, one of the four budgets agreed upon by the Senate and House.
The Senate will be in session again Sunday afternoon, Sept. 27, to resume work on the state budget.
