Michigan firm establishing operations to introduce breakthrough clean energy devices
Tuesday, August 04, 2009
METAMORA, Mich.-- Grid Logic today announced that it is establishing operations in Michigan to commercialize its clean energy technology. Grid Logic’s Intelligent Grid Devices enable electric utilities to operate with lower electrical losses and more easily incorporate wind, solar and other sources of alternative energy.
The company projects that use of its devices could save the United States more energy annually than the total current contribution of solar and wind combined, while reducing the need for burning fossil fuels that create CO2 emissions and harmful greenhouse gases.
Electric utilities throughout the U.S. and around the world have an urgent need for such smart grid infrastructure solutions to stabilize their networks and allow them to operate more efficiently in the face of increasing power demands. Grid Logic is working toward trials of its devices with several U.S. utilities.
Grid Logic’s technology is based on superconducting materials discoveries made at Stanford University by Dr. Matthew Holcomb, a Michigan native and University of Michigan graduate who returned to the state to develop the company.
“As the manufacturing heartland of America, Michigan is the ideal location for building Grid Logic’s devices,” said Holcomb, who is the chief technology officer at Grid Logic. “Unlike some other green technology companies that are likely to see stiff competition from overseas manufacturers, Grid Logic is in a position to develop strategic advantage through the combination of Michigan manufacturing expertise gained from the auto industry and superior product capabilities resulting from our patented materials technology.”
Grid Logic’s Chief Executive Officer, George Caravias, said, “We expect to conservatively create over 150 manufacturing, engineering and administrative jobs in Michigan over the next five years. We are hopeful that worldwide demand will require us to expand even more quickly.”
State Sen. Jud Gilbert and state Rep. Jim Slezak were instrumental in supporting Grid Logic’s development in the state.
“This is exactly the type of business we need in Michigan and exactly the type of technology we should be exploring to upgrade our grid,” said Sen. Gilbert, 25th District. “Grid Logic is a job creator and I look forward to continuing to assist them in their expansion.”
Added Rep. Slezak, 50th District: “We in government have a unique opportunity to use stimulus funds and state programs to help Grid Logic and other promising clean energy companies to locate and thrive in Michigan.”
U.S. senators Levin and Stabenow also supported Grid Logic with a funding request for $4 million in the Federal FY 2010 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bill. The company is in discussions with various Michigan state agencies and Lt. Governor John Cherry’s office regarding programs that will help accelerate Grid Logic’s development in Michigan.
