State Senator Jason Allen discussed the current challenges facing the auto industry and its suppliers with Neil De Koker, president and CEO of the Original Equipment Suppliers Association. The trade group represents 325 original equipment suppliers that design, develop and manufacture the parts that go into new vehicles as well as 91 other companies. De Koker was in Lansing to testify before the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee, chaired by Allen. The Traverse City lawmaker and his colleagues heard De Kokers strategies on how Michigan can succeed by providing a competitive workforce, competitive corporate tax structure and cost effective logistics infrastructure. Sen. Jason Allen, chair of the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee, recently joined Gov. Granholm during a bill signing ceremony for legislation that will help protect Michigan charities. The new law, which Allen supported, eliminates any potential "pop up" in property taxes when property owned by a Boy or Girl Scout council, Camp Fire Girls' organization, YMCA or YWCA changes ownership as part of a consolidation or merger with another similar organization. Lawmakers took testimony from the MEDC about the Michigan Strategic Fund Board’s refusal to act on an inducement resolution.
The resolution would allow the Detroit International Bridge Company the opportunity to pursue the sale of private activity bonds as a means of funding Phase II of the Ambassador Bridge/MDOT Gateway Project.
