SENATE REPUBLICANS BALANCE BUDGET WITHOUT RAISING TAXES, VOTE DOWN GOVERNOR'S $1.5 BILLION TAX PLAN
"Today, Senate Republicans showed bold leadership and a commitment to helping Michigan regain its financial footing. We accomplished a resolution to the 2007 budget deficit without asking Michigan families and job providers to shoulder the burden of the governor's $1.5 billion tax increase," said Bishop, R-Rochester. "Balancing the state's '07 budget deficit without asking residents and businesses to pay more will require all of us to make painful sacrifices, but we believe it's the right action to take. The budget solution we've put forth looks out for the long-term interests of the people of Michigan." [more]

SEN. MCMANUS: GOVERNOR MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR DEPARTMENT OVERSPENDING.
"As if it weren't bad enough that three departments overspent their budgets by nearly $70 million, we now learn that the Department of Corrections has defaulted on some of its payments and will be overspending by even more than originally thought. Worse yet, we only learned of this when a vendor contacted the Senate majority leader's office out of concern that it wouldn't be able to continue providing services in Michigan, considering how far behind the state was with its payments." STATEMENT FROM SENATOR MICHELLE MCMANUS ON PFIZER'S DECISION TO LAYOFF 2,500 MICHIGAN WORKERS
Granholm’s 21st Century Jobs Fund Needs ‘Some Serious Tweaking’
LANSING – In response to today’s announcement by Pfizer to eliminate 2,500 workers at its pharmaceutical research facility in Ann Arbor, Sen. Michelle McManus, R-Lake Leelanau, released the following statement:
“Ten years ago, John Engler created business incentives to bring Pfizer to Michigan. Today, Governor Granholm is watching them leave. If this is the governor’s 21st Century Jobs Fund at work, I’d say the plan needs some serious tweaking,” McManus said. “What action did the governor take to prevent this devastating loss of high-tech jobs? At a time when Michigan’s economy is faltering, I would hope her office tried every means possible to bring Pfizer to the table and come up with a plan to keep these 2,500 workers and their families in Michigan – but so far, I’m not convinced that is the case.”
