Senator Alan Cropsey

Sen. Alan Cropsey, R-DeWitt, elected most recently in 2006, began his years of service in the Michigan Legislature in 1979 after winning a seat in the House. The experienced lawmaker is the Senate majority floor leader and also leads efforts to fight crime, protect victims, and strengthen the state's judicial system. As senator for the 33rd District, he represents all of Clinton, Ionia, Isabella and Montcalm counties.

Before rejoining the Senate in 2002, Cropsey was a senator from 1983 to 1986 and a state representative from 1979 to 1982 and from 1993 to 1998. He also was vice chairman of the State Board of Canvassers from 1999 to 2001, and chairman in 2001.

Cropsey was born June 13, 1952 in Paw Paw, Mich., and married Erika Rumminger in 1979. The couple has four children: Joel, 27; Gabriel, 25; Nathanael, 23; and Evamarie, 21. The senator received a law degree in 1978 from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing and a bachelor's degree in mathematics education in 1975 from Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C.

Cropsey has received a number of awards and honors for his work in the Legislature, including a Defender of Freedom Award from the National Rifle Association in 1996, Legislator of the Year Award from the Michigan Conservative Union in 1983, the Iron Rider Award from ABATE in 2006 and the Crime Fighter Award in 2008 from Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, Michigan.

He also was named Legislator of the Year in 2003 by the Michigan Association of Drug Court Professionals; in 2004 by the Michigan Sheriffs' Association; in 2006 by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and in 2007 by the Michigan Probate Judges Association.
