Senator Valde Garcia
Elected as the first Hispanic Senator in Michigan's history, Valde Garcia represents the 22nd District which comprises Livingston, Shiawassee, and the southern portion of Ingham counties. 2008 represents Senator Garcia's seventh year serving as a state senator and his ninth year working as a legislator. Before being elected in to the 22nd District, Valde Garcia represented mid-Michigan in the House of Representatives.
Senator Garcia serves on the Senate Appropriations committee, and is vice chair of the newly created Homeland Security and Emerging Technologies committee. He also serves on the Senior Citizens and Veterans Affairs committee, and as chair of two appropriations subcommittees.
Upon graduating from Cedarville College, the Senator has served over 27 years in the United States Army, Army Reserves, and National Guard, including active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm. He holds the rank of Colonel in the Michigan Army National Guard and is currently assigned as the Director of Intelligence for the Michigan Guard.
The Senator has worked as a legislative aid and chief of staff for several state senators. He was also a teacher and business representative before joining the legislature in 1999.
