Kuipers introduces constitutional resolution asserting a right to independent health care

LANSING – A joint resolution asserting a right to independent health care in the Michigan Constitution was introduced in the state Senate today by Sen. Wayne Kuipers.
Senate Joint Resolution K would allow Michigan residents to vote on a constitutional amendment which would proclaim that “every person has a right to provide for his or her own health care.”
“This resolution is about preserving freedom and personal choice in making our own health care decisions,” said Kuipers, R-Holland. “With the current discussions about Obamacare, people are strongly expressing their concerns about what a public system might mean to their health care. I introduced this resolution to let Michigan voters clearly assert that we have a right to make our own health care choices.”
SJR K states that no federal law shall compel any person, employer or health care provider to participate in any public or private health care system. The resolution also says “the purchase or sale of health insurance or coverage in private health care systems shall not be prohibited by federal law or rule.”
“The best way to calm people’s fears about being forced into a federal government-run health care system is to provide a right to independent health care in the state constitution,” Kuipers said. “I urge my colleagues in both the Senate and House to approve this ballot measure. Give the people of Michigan a voice. Give the voters the chance to protect individual health care choices for themselves and for their grandkids.”
To be placed on the ballot the joint resolution must pass both the Michigan Senate and House with two-thirds of the members in each chamber voting yes.
