While we made some very difficult budget cuts-many of which I did not support-I am please to have some good news for Flint come out of Lansing. Yesterday, my colleagues and I in the Legislature voted to approve $4 million in state funding for renovation of the library building at Mott Community College. Many of the facilities infrastructure hasnt been upgraded in more than 50 years, which means todays students are relying on the same elevators and fire sprinklers that were there when I was going to Mott decades ago," said Sen. Gleason (D-Flushing), an alumni of Mott Community College. "This funding will allow the college to move forward with important upgrades to the elevator and fire systems to increase student safety, improve student amenities, make energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly upgrades, including a vegetated roof, make academic and technology upgrades in the library as well as building facilities for faculty and staff professional development. As we strive to prepare our students for the jobs on the future, we shouldnt be forcing them to rely on the facilities of the past, and this project will modernize Motts library building to create an advanced, multi-use facility. And with its approval by the Legislature, we can also move forward and start putting Flint area men and women to work on the project. # # # |
