DETROIT RESCUE MISSION MINISTRIES HONORS SENATOR SCOTT WITH 2009 COMMUNITY ADVOCACY AWARD

LANSING, Michigan – Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries honored State Senator Martha G. Scott (D-Highland Park) with the 2009 Community Advocacy Award at its 100th Anniversary Reception on June 6.

The non-profit organization presented Senator Scott with the award at its celebration at the Detroit Athletic Club in honor of her willingness to serve the Detroit community and be the voice of Detroit in the Legislature.

“I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition,” Senator Scott said. “It is especially meaningful coming from Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, an organization truly dedicated to caring for the least among us.”

Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (www.drmm.org) is Michigan’s largest provider of rehabilitation services, most notably in the City of Detroit. Founder David C. Stuckey started DRMM in 1909 as the City Rescue Mission with little more than an empty building and a pantry of canned food. Since then, DRMM has been responsible for the physical, mental and social rehabilitation of tens of thousands of Detroiters seeking hope.

DRMM operates a number of different shelters around the Detroit area, each focusing on a specific population. They include a shelter for teenaged mothers, two mental health and rehabilitation shelters, treatment centers, transitional housing and permanent housing.

Last year, 3,878 people were provided with emergency food and clothing while 4,182 individuals were provided with emergency shelter for up to three months. DRMM gives at least 230 men, women and children food, clothing, counseling, and a warm place to stay on any given night. Almost 7 percent will be encouraged to enter a substance abuse or detoxification program. DRMM is proud to have assisted in the permanent housing placement of nearly 55 percent of its entire population, both men and women.
