LANSING--State Senator Gilda Z. Jacobs (D-Huntington Woods) offered the following statement today on Governor Jennifer Granholm’s proposal to freeze college tuition made in her 2009 State of the State speech tonight.

Senator Jacobs’ response to Governor Granholm’s Tuition Freeze Proposal:

“In these difficult economic times we all have to tighten our belts and that means asking our colleges and universities to freeze tuition rates so that our students can continue their education. If we want to grow Michigan’s economy then we need to keep Michigan students in Michigan attending Michigan schools. I know from personal experience that when our young people leave the state to go to school, they are far more likely to take a job out of state after they graduate. A tuition freeze now will make higher education more affordable, and that will help us keep our students with their energy and new ideas here in Michigan.”
