Jacobs Calls on Congress To Act Quickly on Help for Auto Industry

LANSING---State Senator Gilda Z. Jacobs (D-Huntington Woods) has co-sponsored a resolution urging Congress to adopt an assistance package for the American auto industry.

“Too many families and communities depend on our auto industry to just let the industry fail,” said Senator Jacobs. “Michigan as well as the country needs the jobs that the auto industry supplies through their factories and through the auto suppliers and dealerships.”

Like many other sectors of the economy, the automotive industry has been hurt by the dramatic spikes in oil and energy prices and reduced consumer confidence. The shaky national economy has made the capital-intensive research and development process difficult as the industry shifts to compete in the new global economy. Federal assistance will help the automakers come out of this crisis stronger and more competitive than ever. And that means that big and small communities across the state and nation who are home to many auto related companies will be stronger as well.

“We can’t have a strong economy without these jobs,” said Senator Jacobs. “So I am urging Congress and the President to act quickly to help the auto industry just as they have helped the financial industry.”

Upon the resolution’s passage it shall be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
