DETROIT—In the wake of the Schott Foundation for Public Educations report that Michigan ranks dead last in educating black males and that the Detroit School District is second worst in the country at educating young black men, Senator Hansen Clarke (D-Detroit) is asking for a state-wide emergency task force to be set up to determine how to dramatically improve the public education of black males. Sen. Clarke will contact Governor Granholm, the Detroit School Superintendent Dr. Connie K. Calloway, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan, school union, business, and parent group leaders, and Dr. John H. Jackson, President and CEO of The Schott Foundation for Public Education. The miseducation of black males has become a crisis not only in Detroit but in the Michigan public school system that we must correct to save a generation of young people, said Sen. Clarke. We must improve Michigans public school system especially in urban school districts. For the past two years, Sen. Clarke has been working to get a state performance audit of the Detroit Public Schools in order to correct problems in the misspending of education dollars. He will soon seek a forensic audit of the Detroit Public Schools. # # # |
