Clarke-Coleman Calls for Swift Action on Automotive Industry Support

Senator urges for assistance as Congress debates state of Big Three

LANSING-Yesterday State Senator Irma Clark-Coleman (D-Detroit) cosponsored a resolution that calls on the President and United States Congress to adopt an assistance package for the American automobile industry.

“The automotive industry plays an enormous role in our nation’s economy, particularly Michigan’s” said Clark-Coleman. “Lending aid to the Big Three automakers will not only help save millions of jobs across the country, it will help the industry revive itself and give them the tools they need to produce quality cars for the 21st century.”

With the automotive industry shifting to compete in the new global economy, dramatic spikes in oil and energy prices and reduced consumer confidence have made the capital-intensive research and development process difficult. By investing federal dollars into this industry that has become the backbone of our economy, automakers can come out of this crisis stronger and more competitive than ever.

Upon the resolution’s passage it shall be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
