SEN. CLARK-COLEMAN ANNOUNCES $590,000 IN ROAD FUNDING, JOBS

LANSING – State Senator Irma Clark-Coleman (D-Detroit) recently presented a check for $592,630 to neighborhood associations in her district signaling their area’s share of local Jobs Today funding for road construction.

The projects are part of Governor Jennifer Granholm’s Jobs Today program to create employment opportunities and stimulate Michigan’s economy. Three roadways on the near west side of Detroit will be rebuilt creating hundreds of jobs in the process – Fullerton Ave., Schoolcraft Rd. and Schaefer Hwy.

“I am pleased that residents of Detroit will have safer roads on which to travel,” Sen. Clark-Coleman said. “These projects will not only improve our streets, but will jump start our local economy and enhance our quality of life.” Sen. Clark-Coleman presents a check for $590,000 in Local Jobs Today Funding to neighborhood associations in her district on Sept. 14, 2006.

The road projects, slated to start in early spring, are part of the first round of Local Jobs Today efforts that total over $16 million for the Metro Detroit region. In March, Gov. Granholm called on state lawmakers to change transportation funding laws to allow the state to issue bonds for local transportation grants and loans.

Sen. Clark-Coleman made the check presentation at the monthly meeting of the Barton-McFarlane Neighborhood Association, 8222 Joy Rd. This association is one of the most active community groups in the city.
