SEN. BARCIA’S LEGISLATION AIDING DISABLED BOW HUNTERS SIGNED INTO LAW

Law offers alternative for hunters who are unable to use a standard bow

LANSING, Mich. – Senator Jim Barcia (D-Bay City) and Governor Granholm were recently joined by Jerry Keck and Bruce Levey from the Michigan Bow Hunters Association for a ceremonial bill signing of Senate Bill 572, now Public Act 169-08. The new law, sponsored by Sen. Barcia, will allow disabled hunters to hunt game with a modified bow during the open season if the person holds a license to hunt and abides by all other hunting laws and rules. The bill passed the Senate and House with bipartisan, unanimous support.

“Expanding the permit process will allow more hunters to get back into the woods and take advantage of Michigan’ s outdoor recreational opportunities," said Barcia, who serves as the chair of the new Hunting, Fishing and Outdoor Recreation Committee. "This bill signing marks an important step in removing barriers for Michigan residents with disabilities and offers them alternatives so they can continue their favorite pastime."

Public Act 169-08 amends the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to issue a permit for a modified bow which may be shot with one arm. The permit can be revoked if a person is convicted of violating the authorization.

The legislation had numerous supporters, including the Michigan Bow Hunters Association, the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, and the Department of Natural Resources.
